Ok , I just saw a program ( or should I say half a program…I had to go to work) that pointed out how purebred dogs have changed and consequently the health of some of them have deteriorated so rapidly because of OUR breeding practices its..in my my opinion, just sickening. And this isn’t about “American vs. European” either because this show was filmed in EUROPE ! I guess you could say this is closer to being a “show quality vs. working”but it really shouldn’t be a US vs. anything. Anyway… here goes:

This was showcasing how man has manipulated the design and functionality of their dogs and the defects whether they be mechanical or neurological type diseases. First thing they showed was the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel which is, if not the most popular breed, very close to it in the UK. The short snout and small domed head is greatly ...

When it comes to tough and intimidating guard dogs, the Doberman pinscher is among the most well-known breeds.
However, behind this tough exterior is a smart, athletic, and loyal dog that can make a great companion for families. Here is some trivia about this breed that is built for speed: sources explain that it originated in Germany during the late 1800's.

The dog is described as having a medium build, with a square body, with height ranging from 24 to 28 inches. The coat has short hair, which makes it easy to clean and groom. The common colors for Doberman pinschers are black, rust red, bluish black, and fawn. There is always an energetic and alert expression with this breed, and it also apparent in its stance and gait.

Judging the Dobermann – An issue of breed standards
    by Rajvinder Singh, Singapore

The subject of this article is to discuss the main differences of the current Dobermann standards. Although the Dobermann has had a short history as a breed, its development and evolution has differed on both sides of the Atlantic. In fact, today, one can even discern the two distinct Dobermann types: the American Doberman Pinscher and the European Dobermann. For me, they are more like two different breeds already, both in conformation and working abilities.

Presently there are three breed standards for the Dobermann.

Import European Dobermann Pinschers Focus on Workability
The Doberman Pinscher was originally produced in Germany as a personal protector for individuals and families, and for police and military work. Throughout Europe, this is still the case. Here the Doberman, or Dobermann as it is spelled, is viewed as a dog primarily for protection work and is bred with the intention of maintaining the traits needed in a protection dog, usually termed 'workability'.

The Truth About the Warlock Doberman

If you have considered buying a Doberman Pinscher, you may have done some research and come across people selling “Warlock” Dobermans. Sometimes they are referred to as King Dobermans or Goliath Dobermans. The idea behind using the Warlock name is to imply a bigger, better Doberman. The Warlock Doberman became popular in the 1970’s, at the height of the breed’s popularity. Amateur breeders used the Warlock name as a selling point.

People believed that bigger was better, so they wanted the biggest, fiercest looking Doberman Pinscher they could buy. The breeders that were interested in making money, rather than improving the breed, bred their dogs to Great Danes to get the bigger dog....

    What is Schutzhund?

The literal translation from German to English of the word "Schutzhund" is "protection" or "guardian" dog, but that's really quite misleading. In many films, the Doberman Pinscher is depicted as a very fierce guard dog who is curling their lips up and ready to attack. It's true that the Doberman was created to be an formidable dog by a German tax collector named Louis Dobermann. Louis collected taxes door to door, and many were unwilling to pay their taxes, therefore he created a breed that would show force, and ease his duties.

Over the years, the breed has been tamed down. Granted there are still many Dobermans who are trained in protection work as well as used in police work, the majority of the breed are pets. The Doberman makes an exceptional pet, and can fit into nearly any lifestyle. They're very short coated, which makes grooming them a simple chore. There is some shedding involved with the breed, but brushing them weekly will lessen this problem.

Earthquakes, tornadoes, avalanches, terrorist attacks. Searching for survivors through the destruction caused by these disasters can be physically exhausting and painstaking and sometimes simply impossible work for rescue workers. But search and rescue dogs do what humans cannot: detect victims using their powerful sense of smell.

There are at least seven types of search and rescue dogs: trailing dogs, tracking dogs, air scent dogs, water search dogs, cadaver dogs, disaster dogs, and avalanche dogs.

In addition to search and rescue, dogs are used for many other vital tasks, including helping to ensure security in airports and subway stations, detecting drugs in the cargo of incoming ships, and assisting in the investigation of crime scenes.

Legislation that would "give pets a second chance at life" has been introduced in New York by Assembly Member Micah Kellner and Senator Thomas Duane. The Bills, which are named “Oreo’s Law” and officially title A9449 and S6412, will be heard in the New York Legislature Agricultural Committees in early January.

Oreos Law, modeled after the California Hayden’s Law and guided by the intent to save adoptable and treatable animals from certain death, would require an animal shelter to relinquish a pet to an established rescue group if it is about to be euthanized.
